We're seeing a pattern in founder conversations: everyone's building AI agents, but almost nobody can describe what their agent actually does beyond the first demo. The infrastructure is there. The API calls work. But the agent itself? It hallucinates customer data, misses context from three days ago, and confidently gives wrong answers to basic questions about your product.

The Copy-Paste Prompt for Building Better Agent Context

Most founders are prompting their agents with vague instructions like "You are a helpful customer support agent." That's not specific enough to drive real behavior.

Here's a prompt structure that actually works. Customize the bracketed sections for your business:

CURRENT CONTEXT:
- Today's date: [dynamic date]

- User segment: [behavioral segment]
- Recent activity: [last 3 actions]

KNOWLEDGE SOURCES:
When you need information:
1. Use get_current_[data_type] for live product/pricing data
2. Use customer_history for this user's background
3. Use recent_changes for updates in last 7 days
4. Only search docs for conceptual/process questions

DECISION FRAMEWORK:
- If [condition], escalate to human
- If [condition], suggest [specific action]
- Never assume [specific thing you see agents mess up]

TONE: [2-3 specific tone guidelines with examples]

Before responding, check: Does this answer account for what's happened in the last week, or am I working from old information?

This prompt does three things most founder prompts miss: it explicitly surfaces recency, it structures how to use tools, and it forces the agent to check its own temporal awareness.

Where Agents Break in Production (And How to Fix It)
